Happy Wednesday and welcome to this week’s edition of

A View from the Hill

Today, May 14th, as you all know is National Dance Like A Chicken Day, but I hope you can take a break from dancing to join me as we take a look at “A View from the Hill”, outlining coming events at the Park Hill Racquet  Club.

OPEN HOUSE:

We are having an open house this Saturday and Sunday (May 17h and 18th) from 2 to 4 PM.  These events are designed to showcase our fabulous club to potential new members.  Please stop by if you can, have a cocktail at the members lounge, Bowl a Game on our fabulous alleys, let these potential members know what a fabulous club we have here nestled in the middle of Park Hill.  Don’t forget to mention to them the fabulous ads running on Westchester’s own News 12 for the next three weeks.

Park Hill Players:

After an outstanding opening weekend performance of A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia this past Friday and Saturday, the players are channeling their inner Ernie Banks and saying “Let’s play two”…. Weekends that is.  If you missed the performance, no worries, the PHP’ers will putting on two more performances of their show this Friday May 16th at 7:30 and a special Sunday Matinee May 18th at 5PM.  As mentioned before it is a play about a husband, a wife and a stray dog who enters their life and the ensuring comedic chaos that ensues.  Since today (May 14th) is International Chihuahua Appreciation Day, what better way to celebrate the day than purchase a ticket to a play about a dog.  Get your tickets one of three ways; Online HERE, e-mail chrisg1@optonline.net to request a ticket, or simply show up at the door, always plenty of seat availble the day of the performance.

TENNIS:

Although my mother always told me “Don’t look back, you are not going that way”,  I am going just take a quick  look back at the previous week’s tennis news

Our tennis teams have started their season.  The WCTL Smooth Division team evened their record at 1-1 with a win last week over the Coveleigh Club of Rye.  The WCTL Sticky Division team also evened their early season record at 1-1, with a win over Pelham Country Club.  The MITL ladies team has stumbled out of the gate with two tough loses, but the season is early.

Ok, back to looking forward.  This week the Smooth Division has an away game but you can come out and cheer our Sticky Division team on Sunday May 20th at 11:30 as they take on the Shenorock Shore Club on our very own Red Clay courts.  The MITL ladies team works to get off the snide when they go up against Whippoorwill at 9:30 on Tuesday May 20th right here at Park Hill.  Come out and watch some great tennis and cheer on our teams!!

While the Memorial Day weekend is a little bit out of view, keep your eyes peeled for info on the Memorial Day Fun Tournament and the Wednesday “Drop in Matches”.  The courts are now open for play, so come on out and shake off the rust of the winter months.

POOL, and little help from our friends

The pool committee is hard at work getting the pool ready for the Grand Opening Memorial Day Weekend.  They are asking for volunteers to help cleaning up the pool deck, getting the loungers and chairs cleaned and set up.  If you can spare a little time this Saturday starting at Noon.  Any little bit of time you can pitch in would be greatly appreciated.  Much more info about the pool season in next weeks A View from the Hill

UPGRADED KIDS ROOM (And Kid’s Art Day):

Led by our newly organized Kids Committee (made up of teen and preteen members), over the winter out group  of volunteer gremlins have refurbished, refurnished and refinished out Kid’s Room.  Being an old curmudgeon, I don’t understand why we even have a kids room, much less making it a first class play to play  for the young’uns, but I guess that is why they don’t me vote on things like that (grin).

As a finishing touch on the Refresh, we are hosting a Kid’s Art Day the Monday of Memorial Day weekend (May 26th) at 4 PM.  For a $15 event fee our youngsters will produce 2 pieces of art under the direction of our resident artists.  One piece to bring home to brighten their homes, the second piece to decorate the new Kid’s Room, making it even more of a place of their own.  Don’t forget to RSVP to the e-vite to the event.

BOOK CLUB:

The book club is having their event Thursday May 22nd.  This month’s book is the 1865 Lewis Carrol’s classic Alice in Wonderland.  Please contact Claire Miko (clarabell711@aol.com)  if you are interested and want to get on the Book Club e-mails.

JUST OUT OF VIEW:

Memorial Day weekend events, Friday May 23rd, Pizza and Game Night, Sunday May 25th Tennis Fun Tournament and the not to be missed BBQ and Porch Karaoke.

And to close,

A SHOUT OUT TO OUR “HOUSE MAN” Rogelio (Roger) Herrera:

All the preparations for opening the season, from the pool to the tennis courts to the ballroom and the physical plant that I have been reporting about wouldn’t be possible without the time and talent that Roger puts into this club.  He has been instrumental in helping the pool committee prep the pool, he has been there for the Park Hill Players as they been rehearsing on his “front porch” these last few months, he has diligently prepared the courts for play, even servicing our court roller so that is in tip top shape to keep our treasured “Red Clay” courts in excellent condition.

So when you see him around the club, don’t forget to say hi and thank him for all his hard work.   For those many volunteers that have been pitching in to make this club so beautiful, please remember that Roger has many tasks to complete, and if you need his help, please run the request thru the Directors rather than asking Roger directly.  This way we can apply his various talents most efficiently.  Just drop a line to parkhillracquetclub@gmail.com and the Directors will coordinate the assistance.

I want to thank all of you have dropped me a line with comments, suggestions, and yes the occasional pointing out of typos.  Keep those comments and suggestions coming by e-mailing the ViewMaster at PHRCView@gmail.com and we will bring it into View.

So as we enter our 133rd season (Yes, The park Hill Racquet Club was established in 1892) I just want to say I am looking forward to a GREAT season, and I hope to see you around the club.

PS  I couldn’t figure a way to bring these two facts into this week’s edition, but I don’t want to waste the research (grin). So here is to Jamestown Virginia, the first permeant settlement in the New World which was established on this date in 1607.  Also, May 14th marks the establishment of the State of Israel, which proclaimed its independence from Great Britain on this date in 1948
