Happy Wednesday!
Welcome to this week’s edition of:
A View from the Hill
Join me in celebrating the anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. On this day in 1969, Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins blasted off from Cape Canaveral on their historic journey to the moon. While Neil and Buzz got to walk on the moon, intrepid pilot Michael Collins was left behind, only getting to orbit the moon, not walk on it. In the interest of not having any of you be “left behind” from the many events around the club, let’s get to the various goings-on here on the Hill this week.
TENNIS:
Let’s start off with a wrap-up of our WCTL and MITL early summer seasons. The WCTL Smooth team came up a bit short against Orienta last week and finished just off the podium, earning a respectable 4th place finish in their division. The WCTL Sticky team did not fare as well, but thanks to Pelham, did not finish last. Finally, our MITL C1 team did us proud, finishing 3rd in their division. All three teams enjoyed a fun, yet competitive, tennis journey around the county. Kudos to all for representing the club so well this season.
Our senior teams are just starting out. This coming Tuesday (7-22), our MITL 50 Love team looks to make it three in a row with a match against Scarsdale at 9:30AM, right here on our beautiful red clay courts. Our WCTL Seniors are taking a week off, recovering from a hard-fought loss to Orienta last week.
For those of you not in the competitive senior leagues (which, by the way, Westy tells the ViewMaster, you can still join by e-mailing him at tomwestconsult@aol.com) there is always our weekly Sunday Round Robin Fun Tournament. No need to reserve a spot, just bring your racquet and your smile to the club on Sunday at 4:00PM to enjoy time with fellow members on the court. And as always, use the tennis reservation sheet to reserve a court or look for a game.
POOL:
The pool continues to be Open EVERY DAY (Sunday–Thursday, 11:00AM to 7:00M and Friday & Saturday, 11:00AM to 8:00PM). Come join your fellow members in our very own “Cement Pond.” No need to worry about parking, plenty of spaces available. There are no plans to follow Oklahoma City’s lead and install parking meters as they did for the first time on this date in 1935. As mentioned in last week’s View, plans are still in the works for a Pool Volleyball Night. Keep those eyes peeled for further info in your inbox.
FRIDAY POTLUCK BBQ:
Our hosts this week are Matthew Krawiec and Karin White. On Friday at 7:00PM, they will fire up the grill and serve beef, pork with shrimp, lamb, spicy chicken, along with the traditional burgers and dogs. In the spirit of NASA’s Gemini program (yes there is a bit of a space theme going on here), think about bringing a friend (or two) to enjoy not only Matt and Karin’s delightful grilling, but also the always delicious members’ sides and desserts. After all, Friday, July 18th,marks the 59th anniversary of the launch of the Gemini X flight, where the above-mentioned Michael Collins became the first person to walk in space twice (so while he didn’t walk on the moon, he had already made it into the record books).
BOOK CLUB:
This month’s book, Horse by Geraldine Brooks, is a fascinating tale of a discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history. From these strands, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history. Please reach out to Claire Miko (clarabell711@aol.com) for more information.
MEMBERS’ LOUNGE:
As always, the mixologists at our Members’ Lounge are standing by to quench your thirst, whet your whistle, or just lend an ear in the beautifully air-conditioned oasis from the heat. Members’ Lounge hours are Monday thru Thursday from 3:00PM to 8:00PM, Fridays from 6:00PM to 10:00PM, Saturdays from 1:00PM to 8:00PM, and Sundays from noon to 8:00PM.
That is it for this week’s edition of A View from the Hill. As always, please reach out to PHRCView@gmail.com with any comments, corrections, or suggestions you might have. I love hearing from you.
Until next week, I hope to see you around the Hill,
The ViewMaster
