Happy Wednesday!
Welcome to this week’s edition of:
A View from the Hill
Today is the 53rd anniversary of the launch of Landsat 1, the first Earth resource satellite. Fortunately, PHRC did not need to launch a satellite in order to find out what resources are available to enjoy up here on the Hill. You have theViewMaster. It is also the anniversary of William Austin Burt’s patent for the typographer. In 1829, Mr. Burt received a patent for a clunky device with levers and pulleys that allowed an individual to stamp letters on the printed page. Fortunately for me, that rudimentary device evolved into the typewriter and eventually into the computer keyboard. In honor of these two July 23rd milestones, I take to my keyboard to bring you the resources available this week.
TENNIS:
First, the updates on our MITL and WCTL teams. Our MITL 50 LOVE team continued on their roll, defeating Scarsdale 3-1.5 to remain undefeated. Their next match is right here on our Red Clay courts next Tuesday (7-29) at 9:30AM, when they go up against Willowbrook. Our WCTL Senior team, after a well-deserved week-long rest, faces Larchmont Shore Club on Sunday (7-27) at 11:30AM at home. With both matches at home, make some time to mosey over to the club and enjoy some well-played competitive tennis right from the porch.
If you have the time today, come over and watch the Men’s Doubles Semifinal Match to be played today (Wednesday) at 6:00PM on court 3. Art Liberatore & Vinny Liberatore take on Jean Lambert & Andres Martinez-Muniz. The winners play Pat O’Hanlon & William Schmid in the finals.
The Women’s Doubles Finals between Christine Burns & Patty Cecere and Claire Miko & Vicky Sturner has yet to be scheduled. Keep an eye out here for updates.
If you have been paying attention to your inbox, you know that registration is now open for the Competitive Mixed Doubles Tournament. Teams have until July 31st at noon to sign up. Details are in the Evite sent out earlier.
The Sunday Round Robin Fun Tournament is on again this week. No need to reserve a spot, just bring your racquet and your smile to the club on Sunday at 4:00PM to enjoy time with fellow members on the court. And as always, use the tennis reservation sheet to reserve a court or look for a game.
POOL:
The pool continues to be Open EVERY DAY (Sunday–Thursday, 11:00AM to 7:00PM and Friday & Saturday, 11:00AM to 8:00PM). Enjoy the cool water or just lounge around sharing time with fellow members. In case you haven’t noticed it yet, this year’s pool upgrade included a new WiFi network dedicated to the exterior areas of the club (PHRCExt). The lightning-fast connection rate will allow you to surf the net, stream your favorite podcasts, or do some remote work (just don’t let your boss know you are poolside – grin). A special thanks to Matt Gervais, our intrepid IT System Administrator for setting this all up. Since today (July 23rd) is System Administrator Appreciation Day, all the more reason to send a shout-out to Matt.
FRIDAY POTLUCK BBQ:
Alas, due to circumstances beyond our control, this Friday's BBQ (July 25th), featuring Steve Ross and Amy King's scrumptious Grilled Shrimp & Succotash, has been postponed. Do not fear, Amy and Steve will be firing up the grill on another Friday this summer. All is not lost, this Friday is National Culinarians Day. So, don your Toque Blanche and fire up the PHRC’s grill and BBQ your own Friday feast. Or for those who, like the ViewMaster, prefer the cooking to be left to others, order up your favorite takeout, grab a perch and enjoy a meal with friends on the porch.
MEMBERS’ LOUNGE:
As always, the Members’ Lounge provides a refuge from the heat or supplies a refreshing drink poolside. The Bar Committee let us know that yes, they do listen to you. This week they announced expanded Lounge hours. The new hours are Monday thru Thursday: 3:00PM to 9:00PM, Friday 3:00PM to 11:00PM, Saturday 1:00PM to 9:00PM, and Sunday Noon to 9:00PM. It is like Daylight Saving Time every day with an extra hour of refreshment available all week. They also reminded us that Members are not permitted behind the bar at any time, for any reason. Leave that space to our professional bartenders.
That is it for this week’s edition of A View from the Hill. As always, please reach out to PHRCView@gmail.com with any comments, corrections, or suggestions you might have. I love hearing from you.
Until next week, I hope to see you around the Hill,
The ViewMaster
PS: I couldn’t work these fun facts into this week’s edition, but wanted to let you know today is the 198th anniversary of Francis Lieber’s establishment of the first swim school at the Boston Gymnasium in 1827. It also happens to be National Gorgeous Grandma Day (personally, I think “Gorgeous Grandma” is redundant - what Grandma isn’t gorgeous?) What better way of celebrating our grandmas than bringing them to the club for a dip in the pool, or a drink in the Lounge.
