Happy Wednesday!
Welcome to this week’s edition of:
A View from the Hill
Once again, there is a variety of events for tennis players, pool patrons, and, Members’ Lounge enthusiasts. Let me see if I can stitch them together for you in a seamless missive in honor of Elias Howe’s 206th birthday. So let’s drop in a bobbin and get to it:
TENNIS:
It is a busy week in tennis here at the club. Let’s start off with the leagues. The MITL Love 50 team defeated Westchester at home yesterday and will go for two in a row next Tuesday, July 15, at 9:30 a.m. against the Larchmont Shore Club here at PHRC. The WCTL Senior team also goes for two in a row this Sunday (7-13) at 11:30AM against Orienta Beach Club. The WCTL Smooth team will piggyback on this match to close out their season with a chance to move into third place. There certainly will be a lot of competitive tennis to enjoy this week, so come on out and cheer our teams on.
Speaking of competitive tennis, the Men's and Women's Competitive Doubles Tournament kicks off this Saturday (7-12) at 8:30AM. Remember, this is not a mixed doubles tournament, but rather a competition to determine who earns the bragging rights of being the best two men and the best two women on the hill.
On the non-competitive side, we have, as always, our Sunday Round Robin Fun Tournament. No need to reserve a spot, just bring your racquet and your smile to the club on Sunday at 4 PM to enjoy time with fellow members on the court. And for those looking for a game, either competitive or non-competitive, there is always the tennis reservation sheet to reserve a court, or use the “Looking for A Game” tab to find a game.
POOL:
The pool continues to be Open EVERY DAY (Sunday–Thursday, 11 AM to 7 PM and Friday & Saturday, 11 AM to 8 PM). A great way to cool off during the July heat with family and friends. If you’re bringing a guest, please remember, don’t forget to use the easy electronic check-in system (so easy, the ViewMaster has been told, that lifeguard help is rarely needed). And make sure you enter both the first AND last names of your guests. When looking to hydrate in the heat, look no further than the foyer in the clubhouse. The club will be setting up a large, clear plastic container of iced water to make it easy to get your hydration.
I have also been told to be on the lookout for an e-mail from the Pool Committee for info regarding a Pool Volleyball event. Details are still a little blurry, but when it comes into focus, you will be sure to see it here.
FRIDAY POTLUCK BBQ:
Our host this week, Patty Gamba, will be serving delicious Sausage (Pork & Chicken) & Peppers! Of course, the fabulous sides and desserts from our members will be there as well. The grill fires up at 7PM.
BREAKFAST AT WIMBLEDON:
Today (7-9) marks the 148th anniversary of the beginning of the first-ever Wimbledon Championship. The men’s tennis tournament ran until July 19 at the All England Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. Consider yourself a tennis nerd if you knew that Spencer Gore, a 27-year-old Cricket player from Wandsworth defeated William Marshall, a 28-year-old British architect, in three straight sets in a final that lasted 48 minutes.
In a tradition that perhaps is not as long as Wimbledon itself, the Tennis Committee invites you to join them at the Club for our very own "Breakfast at Wimbledon" for the men's final. The crowds are back at Wimbledon and so is our very own "Breakfast at Wimbledon". On the menu at the Members’ Lounge starting at 10:30AM is a cornucopia of English treats: Scones with real clotted cream or butter and raspberry jam; Tea sandwiches; Strawberries laced with fresh whipped cream; Orange Juice, Coffee, and Tea. To round the whole experience off, try a Wimbledon staple: Pimm’s Cup available for purchase at the bar. We may be in Yonkers, not London, but looking at this menu, you’re sure to be transported to the AELTC itself.
MEMBERS’ LOUNGE:
When not hosting “Breakfast at Wimbledon”, the Members’ Lounge is there to serve up your favorite libations. And since today marks the 44th anniversary of Nintendo releasing the Donkey Kong arcade game in Japan, it is nice to note that a vintage Pac-Man machine is available for the elders to relive their early years gobbling up dots. Lounge hours are Monday thru Thursday from 3 PM to 8 PM, Fridays from 6 PM to 10 PM, Saturdays from 1 PM to 8 PM, and Sundays from noon to 8 PM.
That is it for this week’s edition of A View from the Hill. As always, please reach out to PHRCView@gmail.com with any comments, corrections, or suggestions you might have. I love hearing from you.
Until next week, I hope to see you around the Hill,
The ViewMaster
PS In case you were wondering, Elias Howe was the person who invented the first practical sewing machine in 1845.
