Happy Wednesday! Welcome to this week’s edition of:
A View from the Hill
A happy Leon Day to all!! June 25th marks the halfway point to Christmas Day, which means it’s also the day “crafters” begin planning for their homemade gifts and decorations for the December festivities. In that spirit, I am going to try to “craft” a typo-free version of the coming week’s festivities here on the Hill.
TENNIS:
While out MCTL teams—both Sticky and Sweet—and our WCTL team wind down their seasons in the next few weeks, our WCTL Senior Circuit (Over 50) season starts this Sunday, June 29th with an away match at Manursing Island Club in Rye, and our Women's MITL Love 50 (Over 50) League starts up in just a few weeks. Remember, there is still time if you would like to join these teams, just reach out to Westy (tomwestconsult@aol.com) to get on the roster.
Despite the recent heat, matches continue on our beautiful Red Clay courts. This past weekend the competitive men’s single tournament determined the finals pairing of William Schmid against Artie Liberatore. The date to crown the champion has not yet been set; stay tuned for more info on that.
As always, the Fun Round Robin tourney will take place on Sunday afternoon at 4PM. No need to pre-register, just bring your racquet and your smile to the club and enjoy a fun two hours of tennis with your fellow members.
The Tennis Committee has let me know that due to the recent heat wave, they have adjusted the start time of availability of the courts to 8:30AM (from 9:00AM) to allow players to take advantage of the morning coolness. Thanks to Roger and Caroline for putting in the extra work to allow us to start earlier. Please note, Wednesday’s availability will start at 9:00AM due to that’s day’s needed extra care. The tennis reservation sheetreflects the change.
POOL:
Are we ever more thankful for the pool than this week‽ The scorching hot weather has made a dip in our glorious “Cement Pond” even more a necessity. We are now following our full-time summer schedule: the pool is open every day from 11AM to 7PM. When you do join us at the pool, make sure to first stop by the check-in table to register. This year, due to the tech upgrades the Pool Committee put in place last year, check-in is easier than ever. Your pool cards have a barcode on the back—scan that and you’re done! And, since tomorrow is National Barcode Day in honor of the first use of the barcode on June 26, 1974 when a clerk scanned a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, OH, what better way to honor the day then using your pool barcode to check in?
One last note: although International Tee Shirt Day, when everyone was encouraged to wear their favorite tee shirt, has passed (it was last Friday), remember shirts (and shoes) are required when outside the pool fence. This also means you if you’re eating you need a shirt on (unless you are eating on the sun deck), since no food is allowed in the pool area.
KID’S ART DAY:
Our second Kid’s Art Day is this Friday, June 27th from 4PM to 6PM. For a $15 event fee (which includes art supplies and snacks) your youngsters will produce two pieces of art under the direction of our resident artists—one piece to bring home to brighten their homes, the second piece to decorate the new Kid’s Room, making it even more of a place of their own! Don’t forget to RSVP to the e-vite.
FRIDAY BBQ:
Our sting of weekly BBQs starts this Friday at 7PM with host Justine Henry serving up her famous Pork Loin, along with her traditional burgers and dogs. Of course, there will also be the cornucopia of side dishes provided by our fellow members, always the best of the best. Since this Friday is National Ice Cream Cake Day, the ViewMaster will be bringing favorites together in one delicious celebration! Cake and ice cream!
MEMBER’S LOUNGE:
As always, a great way to beat the heat and enjoy a relaxing beverage with friends is the Member’s lounge. Lounge hours are Monday thru Thursday from 3PM to 8PM, Fridays from 6PM to 10PM, Saturdays from 1PM to 8PM, and Sundays from noon to 8PM.
NOT YET IN-VIEW BUT ON THE HORIZON:
Book Club - For its next meeting on Tuesday, July 8th, the book club will read and discuss the much-acclaimed 2024 novel James by Percival Everett. Members interested in taking part in the club can receive Book Club emails by contacting Claire Miko (at clarabell711@aol.com).
Competitive Doubles Tournament - Scheduled for July 12th. Please note this is not for mixed doubles. It is for Men's Doubles and Women's Doubles only.
July 4th Celebrations – A variety of activities are being planned. Keep an eye on your inbox for more info.
That’s it for this week’s edition of A View from the Hill! The ViewMaster has checked over this a number of times, and is hoping to possibly make June 25th Typo Awareness Day in celebration of the first time an edition went out without a typo (grin). If you happen to find a typo, please drop the ViewMaster a line at PHRCView@gmail.com.
Until next week, hoping to see you on the Hill,
The ViewMaster
PS: In case you are wondering why today is called Leon Day, it is not in honor of Leon Hess, former owner of the NY Jets and the producer of the classic Christmas gift, the Hess Trucks. It is because “Noel” spelled backwards is “Leon.” Arcane, useless information supplied at no extra charge.
