Happy Wednesday! Welcome to this week’s edition of:
A View from the Hill
Welcome also to day 183 of the year, folks. With 182 days behind us and 182 still to go, today marks the official halfway point of 2025. As we ramp up our summer season, let’s dive into the View of the coming week:
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS:
Since the New Members’ Cocktail Party (which, by the way, was a smashing success), we have continued to welcome more new members to our family here at our gem of a club on Park Hill. Let’s give a hearty Park Hill Welcome to our newest members: Sally & Angel Collazo, Dejanee Moss & Scott Victorio, Katelyn Andrade & Jonathan Vargas, and Lydia Lopez & Edie Andrade. We hope to see you and your families on the courts, in the pool, or at the Members’ Lounge.
TENNIS:
The WCTL Sticky team, led by Tom Westmoreland (C) and Steve Ross (CC), completed their season and, while not winning it all, the players enjoyed many weeks of spirited competition against other Westchester clubs. Congrats to all the players. Our other WCTL team, Smooth, led by Tom Westmoreland (C) and Artie Liberatore (CC), will finish up their year on July 13th right here on our fabulous Red Clay courts. Mark your calendar and look for more info next week.
Our WCTL Senior Circuit (Over 50) this past Sunday soundly defeated their first opponent, Manursing Island Club by a score of 4-1. Since these over 50 folks need a bit of time to recover (grin), their next match is not until July 13th at home. More info on them in next week’s View. Our MITL 50 LOVE team kicks off their season on Tuesday, July 8th, with a home match against Westchester CC. Come out and enjoy some wonderful tennis from the porch.
The 4th of July weekend’s tennis fun starts this Friday with the July 4th Fun Tournament at 9:30 AM, hosted by Claire Miko and Meredith Lue. Spots are now filled. New RSVPs will be put on a waitlist. The fun concludes Sunday with our weekly Round Robin Fun Tournament. No need to reserve a spot, just bring your racquet and your smile to the club on Sunday at 4 PM to enjoy time with fellow members on the court. Of course, in between the tourneys, there is always time for a fun match. Just check out the tennis reservation sheet to reserve a court, or use the “Looking for A Game” tab to find a game.
POOL:
The pool season is in full swing. Open EVERY DAY during the summer (Sunday–Thursday, 11 AM to 7 PM and Friday & Saturday, 11 AM to 8 PM). And since today is the 88th anniversary of famed aviator Amelia Earhart and her navigator Frederick Noonan’s disappearance over the Pacific Ocean, don’t forget to register at the check-in table when you arrive. We would hate to have you get lost like they did. And don’t worry if an alligator falls out of the sky, like it did in 1843 in Charleston, SC: our team of American Red Cross–certified lifeguards will be there to render aid. And since they are keeping a sharp eye on the swimmers (and possible alligators), please keep interaction with them to a minimum, as they need to focus on all our safety.
BOOK CLUB:
On Tuesday, July 8th, the book club will read and discuss the much-acclaimed 2024 novel James by Percival Everett. Members interested in participating in the club can receive Book Club emails by contacting Claire Miko (at clarabell711@aol.com).
FRIDAY JULY 4TH BBQ:
This Friday we will be celebrating our independence from cooking with another spectacular PHRC BBQ. Steve Savard will be hosting the cookout, serving up not only classic American favorites like hamburgers and hot dogs, but also his specialty—BBQ Chicken! Of course, in addition to the feasts from the grill, our members will be bringing a cornucopia of sides and desserts that will tickle your palate and fill your bellies. In honor of National Caesar Salad Day (which marks the day in 1924 when Caesar Cardini created the Caesar salad for an elite Hollywood crowd at his Tijuana, Mexico restaurant), the ViewMaster will be bringing his world-famous Caesar Salad (OK, it may be only famous in his world, but still…).
MEMBERS’ LOUNGE:
A great way to refresh after burning calories during a grueling match on the courts, or rehydrate after laps in the pool. If you are not into tennis or your idea of a pool day is hanging out in a lounge chair, not to worry, you can always use the lounge to burn calories. Studies indicate that just standing around (or bellying up to the bar) burns approximately 115 calories an hour! Who would have thunk it, the ViewMaster has been burning calories almost every day for years. So come burn some calories with me. Lounge hours are Monday thru Thursday from 3 PM to 8 PM, Fridays from 6 PM to 10 PM, Saturdays from 1 PM to 8 PM, and Sundays from noon to 8 PM.
That is it for this week’s edition of A View from the Hill. Be careful out there today, after all, today is World UFO Day. I would hate for any of you to be abducted by aliens and miss all of the coming week’s festivities. To be sure you are protected, you can buy an insurance policy that covers alien abduction. The St. Lawrence Agency in Florida is one well-known source, having offered alien abduction insurance since 1987.
Until next week, hope to see you around the Hill,
The ViewMaster
PS: I almost forgot (probably because today is National I Forgot Day), as always, please reach out to PHRCView@gmail.com with any comments, corrections, or suggestions you might have. I love hearing from you.
