  • Sadly, Paul Cecere announces his ‘retirement’ from his 11 year career as Court Na…I mean Court Master, effective at the end of the season.   Speaking seriously, Paul has done a yeoman’s task of taking ownership of our club’s court conditions all these years.  Paul was liaison with Oval Tennis. He hired, mentored and managed Janine and Tyler, our court ‘kids’ as well as taking care of other managerial duties.  But Paul has never minded getting his own hands dirty – literally.   If you’d stop by the club at any time during the tennis season, you would find Paul doing whatever task was required, according to the weather: rolling after a rainstorm, watering (without a sprinkler system) on a dry dog day in August, with shovel-in-hand spreading calcium, or digging clay out of the court drains.  Over the last decade, Paul has raised the bar for what we have come to expect – the best clay courts in the county, bar none.  He instituted the practice of players’ sweeping courts after use.  He developed a better drainage system, which has done wonders to channel water away from the courts during and after heavy downpours, thus adding time to our precious outdoor season.  Anyway, we can’t thank him enough for his selfless service to our club.  He has saved us all thousands of dollars in dues!

At the Tennis Awards Brunch, Jim Beirne presented Paul with two identical round “plaques” drawn up by our resident muralist, Richard Haas.  Each has a black&white rendition of Paul with the title “Court Master” above.  There was a hearty applause all around.  Paul thanked everyone with a heartfelt speech.  We will miss your leadership, Paul!

We put out a call to any members who can help out with court maintenance next year.  If you would like to offer your time we would appreciate it!  Write to the club (parkhillracquetclub@yahoo.com) or to Paul (paulsword@verizon.net).   Thank you!

  • Around 25 came by on a Saturday morning to share some quiche, bagels, lox and muffins and to congratulate winners of all our 2011 tournaments.    Patty Cecere announced the winners, who had trouble choosing between great awards – a club visor, hat, t-shirt, towel or mug.  She also thanked the Tennis Committee – Wendy Bodner, Claire Miko, Jim Beirne, Daphne Romeo, Chris Canty, Anne Marie O’Keeffe, and Paul Meissner for their contributions – MITL, Sunday Round Robins, Rookie Round Robins, Tournaments, and Brunches throughout the 2011 season.  Of course, we thank Patty as well!

  • Seven teams competed in the Club Mixed Doubles Tournament last month.  In Round 1, Patty Cecere and Mike Smith defeated Jennifer Ringstad and Jose Alvarado.  Claire Miko and Jon Wallen defeated Kathryn Buckley and Paul Meissner, Patty Gamba and Tom Westmoreland defeated Bill and Donna Dolan.  Max Sanchez and Wendy Bodner got a bye for the round.

In the semifinals, Patty G and Westy lost to Max and Wendy while Patty C and Mike Smith lost to Claire and Jon.  Our Finals result: Max and Wendy defeated Claire and Jon 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.  A great match!  Congratulations to the winners!

As always, we are grateful to Patty Cecere, Wendy Bodner and Claire Miko, who year after year take care of figuring out fair seeding and rounds for these tournaments as well as organizing and running the days.

  • The 2011 Labor Day Tournament was one of the best attended tournaments ever, with 28 players participating!  This year the day was specially marked by officially naming it the Bob Reape Tournament.  Before the tournament began, Jim Beirne gave a short speech stating our gratitude for Bob’s countless years of hard work and dedication to the Racquet Club.   We cannot thank Bob enough!

It was an Almost-All-Tahir finals match for the men!  Winners were Bill Dolan and Noah Tahir beating out Deane Prouty and Sami Tahir.  On the women’s side, Patty Gamba and Dorota Adamek defeated Donna Dolan and Anne Marie Ennis in their final.

  • Eight men competed in this year’s Club Singles Tournament.  The finals match between Max Sanchez and Tom Westmoreland was arranged one evening – and was the match of the season!  In their own words:

”It was a grueling three set match that took more than two hours and every bit of our energy to complete.  It seemed like every game had several very long rallies and at least 5 deuces.  In the end, Max's persistence, consistency and determination were enough to overcome losing the first set in his 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.” – Westy

“It’s hard to explain but it was a great match with a speedy Westy.  We had amazing rallies; it felt like it took us forever to get a point. The score did not reflect the real game; we had infinite deuces, ad-ins and ad-outs.  At the end I just got lucky to come out on top.” - Max
