Our final Friday BBQ of the summer was another success, thanks to our hostess with the mostess, Justine Henry. She thanks all who participated and helped out, especially Susan Proano, Mairead Casey, and – of course – Greg.
“There is no I in TEAM.” Similar to the July 4th Picnic coordinated by Donna Dolan and her group, the Labor Day Picnic was a team effort hosted by Scotty McCambridge, Kevin McInerney, Max Sanchez and Peter Ennis, hereafter to be known as the "Four Amigos". Tasks were divided among the four as follows: Scotty ordered the food for delivery and prepared several dishes. He also acted as the de facto "go to guy" during the entire process. Kevin helped with the set up and served as "grill master" for the day. Max, using a proprietary family recipe, prepared and cooked the ribs and pork to perfection. Peter, in his customary role, did absolutely nothing, but inexplicably was credited with the event’s success.
Other notable contributions came from Rosemary Beirne who gave guidance and helped with the set up and preparation of the coffee and tea. The Chair of the Social Committee, Patty Schumann, also provided guidance throughout the entire process. Chris and Geraldine Canty made potato and pesto salad dishes. Dorota Adamek made her now famous Caesar salad with grilled chicken. David Steck relieved a weary Kevin for a spell at the grill. Jim Beirne was there to help with the grill and other things that the group needed. Ann Marie Ennis did most of the shopping and, along with Dorota, made the oversized burgers that Scotty had to fix. Donna Tahir helped prep a day ahead of time and helped with set up/clean up too. Laura Weinfield cooked and cleaned the shrimp and made her own cocktail sauce from scratch. Alex Proano helped with the clean up. Mairead Casey helped with refill of dishes, the clean up as well as assisting with the coffee and tea. Needless to say, the Four Amigos were grateful for the help.
The biggest contribution, however, came from the ninety-plus members, their families, friends and guests who attended the party and enthusiastically enjoyed the sun drenched day, impeccably manicured tennis courts, refreshing pool, good food and each others’ company. Kevin kept the grill open well past the scheduled closure because of popular demand. The Racquet Club bartenders- trained to handle over 100 - kept the drinks flowing and the party going well into the evening. A good time was had by all. Peter Ennis
A crisp, cool, dry day set the scene for our second-annual Pig Roast. Max Sanchez reports: “The Pig Roast Team was Chris Canty (a must-have for the team, he helped the boys to relax and really shined this year), Steve Savard (our Pit Master…this boy can cook!) and myself (the Pit Boss).
We cooked the pig for 14 hours starting Friday night. A few members stopped by to have a drink, witness the process and give us company for a good period of time. After that, Steve and I took turns feeding the fire and gas throughout the night and early morning. (We did run into some problems starting the roaster, but we came through and got the motor fixed. That was a close call!)”
Besides a great meal, we had some great entertainment. Mark Maier, his brother, and a couple of friends provided live music, free of charge. Their band’s name is Banana Pizza. Our DJ Joe Harbeson provided some toe-tapping tunes in between the band’s sets. A hired face-painter/magician/balloon-artist entertained the children, whose faces sported rainbows and whiskers and tiger stripes for the rest of the afternoon.
Max tells us, “This year’s helpers were: Matthew Krawiec and Wesley Harris, who helped with the prep of the pig Friday. Matt also came Saturday to make the corn and black bean salad. Sami and Noah Tahir were our Saturday utility boys who did everything from arranging to serving to barbequing. They are good workers! Scotty took care of ordering the pig and bread for the event and came with me to pick it up. Kristen McDermott (Napoli) did the mac and cheese. Susan Proano donated her delicious tres leches cake. Kristine Brower ran some errands for us as well. Patty Gamba was in charge of the door (our new style), while I was the enforcer for the cash-paying attendees. I thank God for my cleaning ladies (mother and daughter) who helped clean and serve. Overall it was a great picnic-style day with fewer people than I expected, but a wonderful party just the same. Thank you to all who supported us!”
We thank Max for the tremendous planning and volunteer effort it takes to put this party together. Good job, Max!
